Since this will also be a replaster, the mason is “browning in” the old tile bed with mortar.  The objective is to get the new tile “plumb” or straight vertically.  It also pulls the new tile further out from the old plaster finish.  The new plaster will edge up to the base of the new tile.  This is only the base material.

Interesting side note:  The previous page in this section mentioned that H & H is an equal opportunity weep hole driller (we drill weep holes on every job).  Here is an example of 18 inches of water that was up and under the existing gunite shell.  Without drilling a deep end weep hole, water pressure can push a gunite shell out of the ground (floating the pool).

Here is an example of a pool that floated 9 inches out of level.  For homeowners interested in draining their pool, this small problem needs to be avoided.  H & H helped this homeowner with a full renovation.  Pool was releveled, re-tiled, re-coped, re-decked, and resurfaced.

After some set time, thin set is applied and the tile is set.  Thin set is a masonry product that sticks to the brown in base and the back of the tile.

After the tile is set, grouting in the joints is done.  On this project, a medium gray grout was used.

Once the tile grout has dried, tile cleaning is done.  Any remaining tile grout haze is cleaned up by the next crew.  That crew would be a prep crew’s second visit.  They will be acid washing/bond coating the old plaster surface.
